TECH TIPS

NATIONAL SAFETY MONTH

With June being National Safety Month, it is the perfect time to discuss mobile elevating work platform (MEWP), scissor lift, and boom lift safety.  As we all know, safety is something that we all must practice on a daily basis. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) reviewed data and indicated that the extended height of the lift or the vertical position of the worker as a result of the lift were significant factors for fatal injury. NIOSH found that these height factors accounted for 72% of the scissor lift cases in the Bureau of Labor Statistics Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI) data. 83% of scissor lift cases investigated by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the NIOSH Fatality Assessment and Control Evaluation Program involved falls, collapses, and tip overs within the height categories of 10-19 feet and 20-29 feet. According to CFOI data, 72% -74% of scissor lift fatalities occurred in the construction industry.

It is important that only trained and authorized personnel operate MEWPs. We must also make sure that the equipment being used is safe to operate with new control systems, sensors, wheels, safety products, decals, and more. It is a requirement that equipment is checked daily for proper functions and it is workplace law, as some would say, that quarterly and annual inspections are executed on equipment.  C-Tech has a wide variety of inspection decals available and we can even design and produce custom decals with no set up or proof fees. Something as simple as an illegible decal (label) requires that the machine be red tagged and put out of service. All machines are required to have model specific operator’s manuals and ANSI Manual of Responsibilities on the machine at all times. Keep your manuals safe in a waterproof case on the operator’s platform at all times, and C-Tech has you covered. Tires, structure component integrity, electrical harnesses, warning devices (lights, alarms, etc.), hydraulic leaks, battery condition, as well as worksite inspection are critical to safety on the jobsite.

C-Tech can supply you with tires, manual cases, decals, touch-up paint, electrical components, alarms, strobe lights, hydraulic and electrical components, safety harnesses,  and most anything you need for your JLG, Genie, SkyJack, MEC scissor or boom lift.
