TECH TIPS
FILTERS

Filters are often an overlooked part in most daily maintenance checklists, but it is important to know that it only takes a tiny amount of dust to ruin engines or contaminate hydraulic systems. With your equipment on the line, daily inspections of your filters are critical.

How often should you change filters? The first thing to consider is the environment and equipment use.  Silica is the main ingredient in the dust; it is abrasive and in your equipment, it sandblasts moving parts that have critical tolerances. The dirtier a filter becomes, the weaker its filtration capability. One of the telltale signs of a weakened air filter is decreased fuel economy. Bad air filtration can also foul up the equipment’s ignition system and lead to ignition difficulties. The majority of air filters have either a white or an off-white appearance. After some use, your air filter might show noticeable signs of dirt, but not in all cases.

Most manufacturers recommend hydraulic filters should be replaced at least every 1000 machine-operating hours. There are four types of hydraulic filters: tank return filter, medium pressure filter, high-pressure filter and drive motor case drain filter. The quantity and type of filter(s) may vary by model. Be sure to check your equipment manufacturer’s service manual for more information. When it is time to replace the filter in your equipment, you can rely on filters from C-Tech for long service life.
